Academic Writing. The following resources are designed to help you assess and develop your students' academic writing skills. All our resources are available for free educational use under a Creative Commons licence.You are welcome to link to them, use them and adapt them if necessary for your students, but please acknowledge Learnhigher as authors.

As a PhD Student, The Writing and Language Skills Centre has the following services available to assist you with academic writing and language. 30-minute One-to-One Appointments Mondays 1pm-3pm Only for PhD students, these one-to-one sessions give you the opportunity to talk to an academic skills tutor about your writing.

Its approach is analytical and rhetorical-users apply analytical skills to the discourses of their chosen disciplines to explore how effective academic writing is achieved. It includes a rich variety of tasks and activities, ranging from small-scale language points to issues of how students can best position themselves as junior researchers.

Academic skills encourage students to become more efficient learners. They give students the confidence to participate fully in English-speaking courses and are invaluable outside of the classroom and after they graduate. These skills, which include critical thinking and note-taking, are also highly transferable, and therefore vital for success.

PhD students are pretty interesting people. I should know. I’ve met a lot of them over the years: as a researcher at two different universities, as an attendee, speaker and organiser at academic conferences in three different countries, and as a fellow patron of various pubs, bars and coffee shops.

The Learning Centre offers academic skills workshops that focus on, or explore, different tasks. Many are designed for postgraduate students, such as Writing a thesis proposal, Writing a literature review and Giving your first Conference paper. Workshop programs run throughout Terms 1, 2 and 3. Academic writing is clear, concise, focussed, structured and backed up by evidence. Its purpose is to aid the reader’s understanding. It has a formal tone and style, but it is not complex and does not require the use of long sentences and complicated vocabulary.

CourseWorks is an online, interactive, flexible academic skills program for coursework graduate students, and billed as the online home of graduate coursework students. Topics covered include getting started in your course, making contact with other students, organisation and time management, research and writing, learning styles and critical thinking.

This is an Academic English module for doctoral researchers in the first semester of your second year of a PhD. The module has two purposes: firstly, to help you to identify and correct mistakes in your written English, and secondly, to develop your academic writing specifically in relation to your ability to manage the advanced writing needed in your own discipline.
